Medicare provides access to rebates for many different fertility treatments.
To make sure you are eligible for Medicare rebates, you will need a valid referral letter from your GP or specialist gynaecologist/obstetrician. We suggest obtaining one from your GP, as GP referral letters are valid for 12 months whereas a Specialist referral letter is only valid for three months. If you have a partner, both names will need to be on your referral letter (or you will need separate referrals for both of you) to be eligible for the Medicare Rebate.
All eligible Australian residents and some categories of visitors to Australia can enrol to access Medicare benefits. If you are unsure about your Medicare eligibility status, please contact Medicare on 132 011.
Extended Medicare Safety Net
The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) threshold is a separate benefit in addition to Medicare rebates and is applicable once your out-of-pocket medical costs during a calendar year reach and pass a certain amount.
The 2024 EMSN thresholds are:
- $811.80 for Commonwealth concession cardholders and families for FBT Part A
- $2,544.30 for all Medicare cardholders
