Dr Suzanne Sallevelt
Dr Suzanne Sallevelt, originally from the Netherlands, earned her medical degree with distinction before completing her specialty training in Clinical Genetics in Maastricht. Since 2013, she has served as a consultant Clinical Geneticist at Maastricht University Medical Centre, followed by a locum position in Sydney (2020) before commencing her position at Adelaide’s Women’s and Children’s Hospital at the end of 2020.
At the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, Dr Sallevelt focuses on patient-centered care, ensuring families receive comprehensive support and guidance through complex genetic issues. Since early 2022, she has also worked with Repromed, where she continues to enhance her long-standing commitment to reproductive genetics, including prenatal diagnosis and Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT), as well as mitochondrial genetics.
Dr Sallevelt’s PhD (2017, Maastricht University) is on preventing the transmission of mitochondrial diseases. During her research, she developed and optimised strategies for reproductive counselling that empower patients to make informed choices. She is actively involved in national research initiatives, including the MitoHOPE Program, which explores the introduction of mitochondrial donation into Australian clinical practice, ultimately aiming to improve patient outcomes and support families affected by mitochondrial diseases.
