Who can become an Egg Donor?

Before becoming an egg donor there are a list of requirements and steps involved including reviewing your medical history, completing screening tests and undergoing counselling.

All our egg donors need to:

  • Be aged between 21-38 years
  • Consent to the release of identifying information to any future donor-conceived children (from 18 years old)
  • Agree to comply will all relevant laws
  • Undertake infectious and genetic screening tests
  • Undergo counselling
  • Provide a genetic family medical history
  • Understand their egg donations are selfless (act of generosity, they will not be paid)

Before your donation goes ahead, your medical history will be reviewed, and you will need to complete screening tests to confirm that you meet our stringent health requirements for donation. If you are interested in assisting others in achieving their dream of starting a family, please contact Repromed’s Donor Team on 08 8333 8111 or fill out the enquiry form below for a confidential phone consultation regarding your eligibility.

Legal considerations of egg donors

  • Donors do not remain anonymous. Under many state laws a person born from donation has the right to obtain identifying information (like name, date of birth and address) about their donor once they are 18 years old or from a younger age if the child proves sufficient maturity or if their parent(s) apply and the donor consents.
  • Donors consent to being registered with the South Australian Donor Conception Registry, which is only accessed by donor conceived children once they are 18 years old.
  • Donors are allowed to donate to a friend. Known egg donors are those who know the individual or couple and go through the donor process with their recipients.
  • Egg donors are allowed to find out if any children have been born from their donations.
  • Donors can receive non-identifying information about children born from their donation – including the gender of the child and any birth abnormalities.
  • Egg donors have no financial or legal responsibility for children conceived.
  • Egg donors are not paid for their donation. In Australia, becoming an egg donor is a selfless act – which means one of the main motivating factors is to help other people. It is illegal to profit from an egg donation but you can be reimbursed for certain costs involved.

Can I be paid to be an egg donor?

In Australia, it’s illegal to pay for egg donations. However, we can reimburse you for reasonable expenses incurred during the donation process, such as travel, parking, and other direct costs. All required fertility tests for egg donors are completed free of charge, including results from your AMH test or genetic screening.

Process of donating your eggs

Typically, your journey to becoming an egg donor can be completed in roughly 3-6 months. The process of donating your eggs is very similar to an egg freezing cycle once you have been accepted into our Donor Program. Once you are accepted onto the donor program, the stimulation cycle in which your eggs are retrieved for donation typically takes 2 weeks.

How to become an egg donor?

All donors undergo a screening processes before their donated eggs can be made available for Repromed patients to use in their IVF treatment. Clinic-recruited egg donors at Repromed undergo a thorough review process prior to becoming donors. They also provide medical and personal information which can be shared with potential recipients to help them choose an egg donor that is right for them.

Who your donation can help?

People Experiencing Premature Menopause

When the female partner is experiencing premature ovarian failure and therefore unable to provide eggs for insemination, using an egg donor allows the couple to still achieve a pregnancy and biological parenthood for the male partner.

People affected by genetic diseases

If the female partner has a genetic condition that could be passed on to a child, using an egg donor allows the couple to have children without the risk of passing on the genetic disorder. This choice supports the desire to become parents while ensures their child is not at risk of inheriting the condition.

People who have experienced issues causing female factor infertility

When there is evidence that the egg provider in a couple may be experiencing infertility, using donor eggs offers a chance to still achieve a pregnancy and biological parenthood for the male partner.

Same sex male couples

Same-sex male couples use donor eggs to conceive children biologically related to one partner, fulfilling their desire for a family and create a genetic connection with their child. In these instance a surrogate is also required.
